Preamble

The Qur’an remains the fundamental basis of the Shariah in all its paradigms. It is the source to all the branches of Shariah and is the determining factor in all aspects of our Deen whether it is social, juridical or economical. Every branch of Shariah has its own unique classification and source code, similarly, Tafseer is the source code of the Qur’an.

There remains a great need for qualified experts in the field of Qur’anic exegesis and the sciences of the Qur’an. Keeping the above in mind, The Darul Iftaa takes pleasure in announcing to the public, the inauguration of the first Faculty of Specialty in Tafseer and Qura’anic Sciences in South Africa.

 

THE AIM OF THE FACULTY :

1.1) Promotion of Qur’anic Sciences

1.2) Preparing academically qualified people in the field

1.3) Preparing research articles on Academic topics related to the field

1.4) Creating awareness in the people at large on the importance of the Qura’an and the unique knowledge contained therein.

The faculty will run in conjunction with the Iftaa course. Students who are studying the Iftaa course will have to apply to study at the Faculty of Specialization in Tafseer and Qur’anic Sciences.

Only students of the Iftaa course will be granted admission into the Faculty of Specialization in Tafseer and Qur’anic Sciences.

Student Learning Information

The curriculum will be covered over a period of four levels consisting of 11 modules. Certain modules will be for Tadrees only while others will consist of mutala’ah only.

The curriculum will consist of mutala’ah, muzaakarah and tadrees. These are the fundamental aspects of the manhaj. Muzaakarah and mutala’ah is a fundamental aspect of takhassuss. Students are required to do research on important topics in the field.

In addition to the above:

1.1)Muzaakarah to be done daily for at least 30 mins,2 students per day.

1.2) All material to be done as mutala’ah will have to be recorded and summarized notes presented to the ustaadh in the muzaakarah session.

Assignments and Research papers

1.1)The student will have to write and compile a textbook on any selected maaddah/module comprising of over 200 pages and thoroughly researched and referenced.

1.2) One thesis to be researched on any module after each level comprising of 50 or more pages.

Course Schedule

1.1) Each module/maadhah has a reference code.

1.2) Students are required to use the referencing code.

1.3) Selected modules will be based on mutala’ah entirely while others may be divided into mutala’ah and muzaakarah.

1.4) Students are required to attend certain lessons in the Faculty of Specialty of Hadith Sciences.

1.5) Two or more maada’hs will be pursued at any given time.

NB: The mawaadh/modules might vary from time to time according to the decisions of the faculty members and head of Darul-Iftaa Mahmoodiyyah.

Course Outline

This section is subdivided into two main categories, namely:

1. The division of curriculum textbooks

2. The actual course summary under the different proposed levels.

1.1) Usool al –Tafseer – A101

1.1.1) The student will be required to do a swift reading of Al-Tibyaan Fi-Uloomil-Qura’an in the first week.

1.1.2) Mutala’ah of Hadhrat Mufti Taqi’s Introduction To Uloomul-Qura’an. To be completed in two weeks.

1.1.3) Tadrees of selected portions of Sabeelul-Rashaad.

1.1.4) Tadrees of Manaahilul-Irfaan Fi Uloom al-Qura’an.

1.1.5) Tadrees of the following sections from Al-Itqaan Fi-Uloomil-Qura’an:

a) Pg.657 till pg.757, vol.2, Daarul-Salaam .Bahthul-Eejaaz Wal-Itnaab.

b) Pg.482 till pg.512, vol.1, Daarul Salaam.Qawaaidul-Mufassir.

1.1.6) Tadrees of the following sections of Al-Burhaan Fi Uloomil-Qura’an:

a) Pg.238 till pg.289.Ilmu Mursoomil-Khath.

b) Pg.1028 till pg.1197.Adawaatul-Qura’an.

1.1.7) A swift reading of Al-Fauzul-Kabeer after Al-Tibyaan.

NB: Those sections covered in other books besides Manahilul-Irfaan, will not be covered by the ustaadh, rather, the student will have to complete it as mutala’ah.

1.2) Tarjumatul-Qur’an – A102

This will be done by the ustaadh as Tadrees.One day per week will be utilized for discussion of the various translations of the Qura’an in different languages and salient features as well as academic discussions pertaining to the science itself.

1.3) Tafseerul-Qur’an – A103

Selected Tafaseer will be accorded to every student based on the prerogative of the Head of the Faculty. This Maaddah is purely Mutaala’ah based. The following Kutub are to be used:

1. Tafseer Ibn Katheer

2. Tafseer Baydhaawi

3. Tafseerul-Khaazin

4. Tafseer Roohul – Ma’ani

5. Al-Siraajul Muneer

6. Ahkaamul – Qur’an (Qurtubi)

7. Ahkaamul – Qur’an (Hadhrat Thaanwi)

8. Ahkaam al- Qur’an (Imam Tahawi)

1.4) Tafseer Methodology – A104

Selected chapters from Al-Itqaan and Al-Burhaan. More books may be introduced later.

In addition to the above, the manhaj of Tafseer among the students of Hadhrat Thanwi (raḥimahullāh) has been documented by Ahmed Husain Ismail Husain

1.5) Textual Analysis Of The Qur’an And Related Topics – A105

I’raabul Qur’an (Sheikh Muyyul Deen Durwaish) to be done as Mutaala’ah and Muzaakarah.

Nahw: Jaamiul-Duroosil-Arabiyyah to be done as Mutaala’ah .

Balaaghah: Safeenatul Bulaghaa and other Kutub.

Sarf: Kitaabul-Sarf

Together with the above: Mushkilaatul – Qura’an by Hadhrat Shah Saheb (r.a).

1.6) Takhreejul – Hadeeth Wal Hukmi Alahi – A106

Faculty Of Hadeeth Sciences.

1.7) Fiqhul – Qur’an – A107

Selected books will be done on the topic.

1. Tareequl Fuqahaa Lil – Istidlaal Minal Qura’an

2. Bahthul Qura’an ( Kashful – Asraar)

Mutaala’ah of Fataawa Books on the topic of Tafseer and other related issues. This will be left unto the prerogative of the head of faculty.

1.8) Tabaqaatul – Mufassireen Wa Taraajimihim – A108

Al – Tafseer Wal – Mufassiroon.(Three volumes by Sheikh Muhammed Hussein Al – Zuhaibi)

One period per week with one of the faculty lecturers.

1.9) Analyzation of Qur’anic Narrration And Ilmul Jarh Wal- Ta’deel – A109

This is a very fundamental aspect of Tafseer as it deals with the Riwaayaat pertaining to Asbaabul-Nuzool, Tareekh e.t.c.

There will be a complete study of Fabricated (Mawdhooa’aat) Narrations from different books.

The following books will be also be studied:

2. The section on Jarh in Muqaddamah Ibn Salaah

3. Tadreebul – Raawi

4. Al – Kashful Hatheeth

5. Mawsoo’atul Israa’eeliyyat Wal Madhoo’aath Fi Kutubil – Tafseer.(Muhammed Ahmed Eesa)

6. Manhajul Naqd) Sheikh Noorul – Deen Itr)

1.11) Asbaabul – Nuzool – A111

Selected books from the list below:

1. Asbaabul – Nuzool Lil – Waahidi

2. Asbaabul – Nuzool Lil – Suyoothi

Takhreej of at least fifty Ahadeeth pertaining to Asbaabul – Nuzool.

Academic Policies

The student is required to adhere to all the regulations, policies and rules of the Department in addition to those of the Darul Iftaa.

You will be given a copy of these policies and rules upon admission to the faculty.

In addition to the above, every student is required to observe the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty.

Admission and Selection Criteria

Prospective students are to apply with the departmental head for admission into the faculty.

General Requirements of admission:

  • Ø Certificate of Alim from a reliable Islamic institution/seminary
  • Ø Copy of Passport and identity document
  • Ø Attestation from an authentic scholar residing in the location/area of the prospective student.
  • Ø Copy of final report at the institution that the prospective student had attended.

The departmental head may decide at his prerogative to request other documents.
