Selling Wigs, Fake Nails and Sculptures

Question:

Mufti Saheb

I have a friend who does imports and exports and he is very concerned about some of the products he is selling. He is in doubt wether he is allowed to sell them or not from the shar‘i perspective.

Below are some of the products we need clarification regards:

1) Mannequins (here is a link for the product http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Fat-Catz-Copy-Catz/Mannequins-/_i.html?_fsub=2861096014&_sid=95793764&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 )
And also if these mannequins were headless will it be the same verdict?

2) Wigs

3) fake nails

4) Ladybird/teddy bear keyrings… (meaning keyrings with living being pictures/sculptures)

Answer:

As-salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-rahmatullāhi Wa-barakātuh.

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

We are pleased at your concern to seek Shariah Compliancy with regards to your work. We also apologize for the delayed response. Your answers are as follows:

  1. It is not permissible to buy and sell statues or sculptures of any animate being in Shariah[1]. Therefore it will not be permissible to buy and sell mannequins which are carved in a full human body. However, if the mannequin is headless then it will not be considered a statue and hence permissible to buy or sell.[2]
  2. Sale of wigs is only permissible as long as it is not made from hair of pigs or human.[3]
  3. Sale of fake nails is permissible.
  4. Please see number 1.

And Allah Ta‘ala Knows Best
