What is the meaning and correct spellings of these names

Question:

Assalamualaikum

What is the meaning and correct spelling of the name Raihan and is it appropriate name for a boy?

What is the meaning and correct spelling of the name Rayyan and is it appropriate name for a boy?

What is the meaning and correct spelling of the name Hamid?

Could you also advise on any names which could be added with the above names.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu

One should bear in mind these few points before naming one’s child;

  1. The Prophet Sallalahu Allayhi Wassallam has requested one to give his children good names. There are many examples to prove that that the Prophet Sallalahu Allayhi Wassallam replaced bad names with good ones, so that the ill named person might not develop the bad attribute implied by his or her name. Therefore one should refrain from giving such names which carry evil sense or claim parity (Shirk) with Allah Ta’ala.
  2. Naming one’s child is an expression of Gratitude to Allah Ta’ala for this great blessing.
  3. The names most pleasing to Allah Ta’ala are;
  • Abdullah

Arabic: عبدالله

Meaning: Servant of Allah

  • Abdur Rahman

Arabic: عبدالرحمان

Meaning: Servant of the most compassionate.

This attributive name is mentioned 57 times in the Holy Qura’an.[1]

4. The names of the Prophets  Allayhi Sallaam are the best next to the names of Allah Ta’ala and his attributes,    by doing so one show affiliation with those illustrious figures.

5.The correct spelling is Raihān (Raihaan).

1. Arabic: ريحان

Meaning:

Child, property, Fragrant plant.[2]

Basil, Sweet Basil, Fragrance.[3]

The correct spelling is Rayyan.[4]

2. Arabic: ريان

Meaning:

Luxuriant, Lush, Verdant, Full, Succulent, Fresh, Juicy[5]

3. The correct spelling is Hāmid.

Arabic: حميد

Meaning:

Praiser,  Thank giver.[6]

Al Hāmid is also from amongst the attributive name of Allah Ta’ala.

The worthy of all praises (This attributive name is mentioned 17 times in the Holy Qura’an).

Hence in the above case, one should add the word ‘’Abdul’’ in front of Hāmid. Which will be read as Abdul Hāmid.

Meaning:

Servant of the worthy of all praise.

4. Hamid

Arabic: حامد

Meaning:

One who praises.[7]

5. Hammaad

Arabic: حماد

Meaning:

One who praises much.[8]

One who praises most, A frequent praiser.[9]

A teacher of Imam Abu Hanifah , Ibn Muslim, also Imam Abu Hanifah (ibn al Numan) son’s name.

6. Atiq

Arabic: عتيق

Meaning:

Ancient, Good, Excellent, choice, generous.[10]

7. Yahya

Arabic: يحيا

Name of a Prophet

Meaning:

The lasting, Long lived.[11]

This name is mentioned 5 Times in the Holy Qura’an.

We make Dua that Allah Ta’ala, grants you a pious healthy child who would be the coolness for his parents eyes and a Aalim e Deen (Islamic Scholar) who would spread the words of Allah Ta’ala to the four corners of the world. Aameen.
