My dad bought hot cross buns to eat, but did not know that these are associated with the Easter belief

Question:

As its easter time in the U.K., hot cross buns are being sold.
My dad bought these hot cross buns to eat, but did not know that these are associated with the Easter belief. I said that he shouldnt have bought them and my wife said as long he has not intention of Kufr and a person buys them  with no intention of easter/christian belief, and only buys it for taste or to eat, then nothing is wrong with that.
please can you tell us if buying Hot Cross Buns with no intention of Kufr or easter belief, makes a person non muslim? And if my wife is wrong, does that make her a non muslim?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Dear Brother

Your understanding regarding the philosophy of the Hot cross buns being affiliated with the Easter period is correct. They are usually eaten on Good Friday, Christmas and other Christian festivals.[1] They are clearly embedded with a cross symbolising Crucifixion upon it. The sign of the cross marked into the bun was acceptable on Good Friday to the Puritans (and other Protestant groups) because it commemorated the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The ancient Greeks  marked the cakes with a cross to claim the connection with the goddess Eostre[2]. The pagans worshipped the goddess Eostre (after whom Easter was named) by serving tiny cakes, often decorated with a cross, at their annual spring festival. It is believed that the buns marked with a cross were eaten by Saxons in honour of the goddess Eostre[3] (the cross is thought to have symbolised the four quarters of the moon)[4]; “Eostre” is probably the origin of the name “Easter”.

Hence in light of the above, it will be impermissible to buy and eat such items due to its affiliation with such a belief.[5] A Muslim should take precaution and prevent himself with any affiliation with the customs and beliefs of other religions.[6] The impermissibility is due to the external factors of resemblance and assistance to their beliefs and not the ingredients and the nature of the hot cross buns.

By purchasing and consuming the hot cross bun, you will be supporting the cause and the objective for which it was made for.  Furthermore, the historic fact’s of the hot cross bun reveals the ideologies it symbolizes.

Rasullullah Sallalahu Allayhi Wassallam mentions;

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar Radiyallahu Anhuma narrates; Rasullullah Sallalahu Allayhi Wassallam said; “Whoever imitates a nation will be amongst them.”[7]

Since your family and wife were unaware of the true sense of this custom being affiliated with such deep Christian beliefs, they will be free of committing kufr and shirk. However then too they should make Istighfaar and seek forgiveness for falling into such a mistake unknowingly.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
