Can I Splash Water in Wudhu?

Question:

Assalamu aleikum,

When you wash a limb in wudu, will the wudu be valid if you splash the water so that it reaches the majority of the limb and then spread it with your hands so that it reaches the remaining parts, i.e. basically making masah on some parts of the limb. Or must every part of the limb be subject to running water?

I ask because I find it difficult to make a single handful of water reach every part of my face without having to spread the water by hand to the side parts.

Also, is it necessary that every part of the limb must be made wet enough for water to drip from it?

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1. It is Makrooh (Abominable) to splash water[1] on the face[2] or limbs whilst making Wudhu.

2. Yes, you could spread the water whilst passing your wet hands over the limbs, and make Masah[3] over those parts which does not need to be washed, i.e. the head, ears and nape.

3. It is Sunnah to pass the hands over the limb being washed so no part gets left dry[4]. If a person realizes that a certain part is left dry, it would not suffice by passing a wet hand over it, instead one would have to pour water of that part[5] , whilst taking into consideration that one uses sufficient water without wasting.
