Tooth Removal in Ramadhan

Question:

Dear Mufti
I have an appointment with the Dentist to remove my tooth during Ramadaan, would this invalidate my fast.
Please advice.

(Question published as received)

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Sister,

Extracting a tooth does not nullify the fast. However, during the extraction of the tooth, there is a possibility of water or excessive blood going down the throat and invalidating the fast. Therefore, we would advise you to postpone the appointment until a later date.
However if one carries out the procedure and the fast breaks, due to the water or blood going down the throat, only Qadha (making up) of the fast will be necessary. Kaffarah (expiation) will not be necessary. 1

Insight- Women Matters

Insight #1: The first insight is about the natural emotional cycle of women. Not understanding this can cause many problems in a relationship.

“Women are like waves”:
John Gray uses the term “waves” to describe a woman’s natural emotional cycle. Like waves, women naturally go up and down in how they feel about themselves and their lives. When they are ‘up’, they are able to be more giving, loving, and tolerant. But just like a wave has a peak, it also has its’ dip. And the ‘lows’ are a natural part of the emotional cycle. When a woman is in the low part of her wave, she is not feeling as good about herself and her life. During this time she is not as able to give as much, and is more in need *receiving* assurance, love, validation and understanding.

How a man can misunderstand:
1.
He may feel responsible for the low and therefore become defensive when he sees it. The defensiveness may lead him to do exactly what he *SHOULDN’T* do: Explain why the woman shouldn’t be upset or down! He thinks he’s helping her by convincing her that whatever she’s upset about ‘isn’t a big deal’, but he’s really making things worse by invalidating her feelings! All she needs at this point is understanding and empathy—not someone to tell her that she’s ‘overreacting’ or being too ‘sensitive’ or ‘emotional’. Saying these things will often actually make her feel worse, as she begins to feel that she must defend herself and her feelings, therefore escalating them and often leading to an argument. She is not feeling understood or validated. She will likely feel that the man is being ‘insensitive’ or not understanding her. When the man tries to convince the woman why she shouldn’t be upset, he will likely become frustrated. He will express this frustration by making the woman feel that she’s just overreacting and overly sensitive. But deep down, he is actually frustrated because not being able to ‘fix’ the woman he loves when she’s upset makes him feel like he’s failing. So women, he’s not actually being insensitive. He’s actually just frustrated that he can’t make it better right away.

2.
He may feel that it is his job to ‘fix’ the situation by offering solutions to her problem. Unlike men, when a woman is upset, she is often not looking for solutions or advice; she is looking for compassion, reassurance and empathy. She is looking for validation and understanding. Here’s the secret that a lot of men don’t understand: The fastest way to ‘fix’ a woman when she’s upset about something is to do the *opposite* of what comes natural to men. Don’t minimize the situation. Don’t offer solutions to make her feelings ‘go away’. Just be supportive and empathetic. Just try to listen and validate. Doing this will make a woman feel better very quickly. By the way, this is what women do for other women. If a woman goes to another woman with a problem, the other woman empathizes. This is the women code that men would do very well to understand: Never minimize another person’s pain or feelings.

Note: These insights are only *general trends* and will not apply to all people in all situations.

Holding Qur’an App Without Wudhu

Question:

Dear Mufti

I hope you are well, I wish to know if it is permissible to hold a quran app on a smart phone with out wudu.

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Sister

It is permissible for one to handle a mobile phone that has a Quran application stored on it without wudhu.[1] However one should abstain from taking the mobile phone with the Quran application stored on it into a bathroom or toilet, out of respect and reverence for the Holy Quran.

Is it Sunnah to Cover the Head Whilst Eating?

Question:

Is it Fardh or Sunnah to cover the hair whilst eating because I am told my many to cover my head whilst eating but do not know why. Have you heard of anything regarding this?

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Sister

There is no harm in eating whilst having the head uncovered[1] if there is no non mahrem in the house, however it would be more preferable to eat with the head covered, as it would fall under the etiquette’s and Aadab of eating.

Using Honey Eye Drops Whilst Fasting

Question:

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I know that using eye drops does not break ones fast, but will it break if I use a drop of honey instead?

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Sister

Any substance which is utilised as a form of medication and it is inserted through the eyes would not render the fast null and void.[1]

Is My Fast Broken?

Question:

I wanted to ask a question, does the comming out of mathi (thin white sticky fluid which is discharged due to sexual stimulation e.g. thinking about sexual acts,) from the penis results in breaking of fast. And if it does then only qaza is required or kuffara is also required?

Also, does the comming out of mathi due to trying to rub off penis while thinking of any sexual act results in breaking of fast according to hanafi fiqh? And if it does then only qaza is required or kuffara is also required?

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Brother

1.      One should bear in mind, that just as, it is impermissible for one to indulge in sexual activities whilst fasting, so would it be impermissible for one to fantasize about sexual acts. However, if a person ejaculates due to fantasizing, thinking about sexual acts the fast will not break.[1]

2.      Firstly one should make sincere Tauba and seek forgiveness from Allah Ta‘ala for committing such heinous acts. However if one ejaculates through this act, only Qada would have to be made for the fast and not expiation (Kaffarah).[2]

Answer:

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Sister

If one swallows, one’s own saliva it would not render the fast broken.

These are mere doubts and Waswasa’s (Whispers) you are suffering with. Try to overlook and turn your attention away from these whispers and be firm on your Ibaadat and worship.

Here under is our advice;

1.      Recite Durood and Salawaat upon our Beloved Prophet Sallalahu Allayhi Wassallam in abundance.

2.      Recite Istighfaar in abundance.

3.      Be steadfast on your A’maal (All form of worship acts), performing five times Salaah etc.

We make Dua that Allah Ta‘ala accepts all your Ibaadat and grants you ease and happiness in your life.
